The number of births in Taiwan hit a new low in 2023. According to statistics from the Ministry of the Interior, a total of 135,571 babies were born in Taiwan in 2023, continuing a steady decline from the 193,844 in 2017, 181,601 in 2018, 177,767 in 2019, 165,249 in 2020, 153,820 in 2021, and 138,986 in 2022. At the same time, deaths in Taiwan exceeded 200,000 for the second time in recorded history, totalling 205,368, resulting in a natural population decrease of 69,797 people (although net immigration in 2023 helped to increase Taiwan’s overall population by 0.67%, or 155,802 people, to just over 23.42 million at the end of 2023).
The reasons for Taiwan’s shifting demographics are varied and complex but the shrinking birth rate and ageing society will have profound consequences for society and the economy as the workforce decreases and the number of ageing dependents increases.
This summit has been arranged for the second consecutive year by the FFA to enable ECCT members and government representatives to share and discuss best practices presented by international consultants and local enterprises, with the aim of finding solutions to demographic challenges and talent shortages. Among other issues, keynote speakers will cover global trends in talent and population sustainability, strategies and practices to address the challenge of low birth rates and legal and policy perspectives on creating family-friendly and talent-oriented workplaces.
About the FFA
The ECCT’s Family Friendly Alliance (FFA) was established in 2022 as a platform for collaboration among various stakeholders to address the challenges resulting from Taiwan’s low birth-rate and ageing population. Its mission is to cooperate with the government, medical professionals, research institutions, NGOs and other stakeholders to find and promote solutions to support a healthy and sustainable population development, in particular, falling birth rates, an increasingly ageing population, and to create a family friendly environment in Taiwan.
