Grilling the Fund Manager Series with Mark Liu: First Sentier Investors
Volatility has been the only constant in the world of investments. Over the past decade, most Asian markets have performed poorly, but First Sentier sees this as a reason for greater optimism. There is room for active investing to take center stage as investors seek to capitalize on opportunities in Asia to generate returns. While we can’t predict what will happen to Asian markets next, we can focus on identifying high-quality companies and buying them at sensible prices. First Sentier’s portfolio, encompassing both Asian fixed income and equities, remains well-positioned to generate attractive risk-adjusted returns in the long run.
Listed property and direct property have delivered similar long-term returns until central banks began tightening monetary policy and increasing interest rates. In First Sentier’s view, the case for including listed property in portfolios should be considered based on long-term returns, liquidity, and the ability to offer a strong inflationary hedge. Potential interest rate reductions in the second half of 2024 could also serve as an important catalyst for the REIT sector. The team continues to invest in a range of high-quality assets in high barrier-to-entry urban locations in the world’s most bustling cities, which are well-positioned to take advantage of growth opportunities.
