The prevalence of obesity in Taiwan is rising. Health utilisation and medical costs are expensive and increasing for obese patients, both for surgery and for treating metabolic syndrome. Thus, obesity not only causes chronic diseases but also increases the economic burdens on patients and the healthcare system.
At this event, our guest speaker will present the main findings of a study which explored the epidemiology of obesity in Taiwan, the health utilisation and medical costs and the impact of chronic diseases caused by obesity. Based on data retrieved from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database using the Taiwan National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data, the study provides implications for the policymakers.

About the speakers
Dr Ou Huang-tz (Anita) is Professor of the Institute of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science in the College of Medicine at National Cheng Kung University. In the United States, she was previously a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Michigan and later Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at South Dakota State University. In Taiwan, prior to her current post, she was Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor at National Cheng Kung University. She holds a master’s degree in clinical pharmacy from National Cheng Kung University and a PhD from the University of Michigan in the United States.
Dr Lin Wen-yuan is Professor and Director of the Department of Social Medicine in the College of Medicine at China Medical University Hospital where he is concurrently Deputy Superintendent of the Center of Health Evaluation and Promotion, Hospital Director of the Department of Community and Family Medicine as well as an Attending Physician. In addition to more than 20 years of practicing and teaching medicine in Taiwan, he was previously a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University in the United States and a Research Fellow at the New York Obesity Nutrition Center at Saint Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York in the United States. Among other current positions, he is Vice President of the Asia-Oceania Association for the Study of Obesity (AOASO), President of the Taiwan Medical Association for the Study of Obesity (TMASO), President of the Taiwan Health Evaluation and Promotion Association (THEPA) and President of the Taiwan Association for Comprehensive Care of Chronic Diseases. He has published more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He holds an MD and PhD from China Medical University, and ScM and EMBA degrees from National Taiwan University.
